Vascular Treatment Options - Common Surgical Interventions

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair

A weakness in the aorta, the main artery from the heart, can rupture, resulting in rapid blood loss and death. Learn more.

Carotid Endarterectomy

Narrowing of the carotid arteries, vessels which carry blood to the brain, can result in stroke. The procedure removes fat and cholesterol build up from inside the carotid artery in the neck and restores adequate blood flow to the brain. Learn more.

Hemodialysis Access

Communication between an artery and vein, in the arm, is created to allow for permanent access for hemodialysis. Either an atriovenous fistula can be made or an atriovenous shunt can be used. Learn more.

Femoral/Popliteal bypass

A procedure to repair a blocked artery in the leg to improve blood flow to the lower extremities.

Varicose Veins

The bulging of veins in the legs caused by damaged valves within these veins. This may cause chronic ulcers. Varicose veins can be treated by minimally invasive surgery. Endoscopic Vein ligation helps patients who develop leg ulcers caused by diseased veins.

Peripheral Interventions

Many vascular problems can be treated without the use of general anesthesia and surgery. These procedures involve the use of angioplasty, stents and grafts to reestablish the patency of a vein or artery.

  • Endovascular Stents—used to help keep angiplastied arteries open. Many different stents are available. New technology combines stents with graft material to form a "stent graft".
  • Balloon Angioplasty—Helpful in some arteries to gain immediate improvement of circulation without invasive surgery.
  • Endoluminal Grafts—A stent graft is used to repair aneurysms.

Procedures using stents, grafts and angioplasty

  • Bypass grafts of the aorta
  • Bypass grafts of the leg arteries
  • Carotid arteries
  • Aorto-illiac occlusive disease
  • Renal arteries
